Time to sell it now. Had the pleasure of owning it twice, after I bought it back I have had it for 17 years. Only traveled 14,764 kilometers so far. Great off-road bike and enough power.
Not much to go wrong with these old XTs.
Bad fuel or forgetting to drain old fuel every now and then can cause the gas tank to rust. And the link arm will become loose in the bushing and bolts.
My XT is not completely original.
Got 15.1 liter Clarke plastic tank, wider steering and raised, guards, slightly harder springs in the forks and rear shock, shorter tail light and cut the rear mudguard for better symmetry.
