The locomotive, originally named "Dwight D. Eisenhower," was a member of the A4 Pacific class built for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in the United Kingdom. It was designed by renowned engineer Sir Nigel Gresley and entered service in 1937.

During World War II, the United States Army Transportation Corps sought to honor General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who played a pivotal role as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe. As a tribute, they selected an A4 Pacific locomotive, No. 60008, and bestowed the name "Dwight D. Eisenhower" upon it.

The locomotive served on the British rail network during the war and the post-war period, primarily hauling express passenger trains on the East Coast Main Line. It was a part of the Lend-Lease program, through which the United States provided military assistance to its Allies, including the United Kingdom.

After the war, the locomotive was renumbered as No. 5021 and later as No. 2001 under British Railways. In 1963, it was withdrawn from service and designated for preservation due to its historical significance. Rather than being scrapped, it was sold to the United States.

In 1964, the locomotive arrived in the United States and was acquired by the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It was restored and put on display as a prominent exhibit, representing the close ties between the United Kingdom and the United States during World War II.

The locomotive was given the name "Dwight D. Eisenhower" once again in recognition of its historical association with General Eisenhower. Today, visitors to the National Railroad Museum can see the locomotive, learn about its wartime role, and appreciate its significance as a symbol of international cooperation.

The preservation of the "Dwight D. Eisenhower" locomotive serves as a testament to its historical and cultural importance, honoring the legacy of General Eisenhower and commemorating the achievements of the A4 Pacific class locomotives on the British rail network.
