"Norway House Indian Residential School" was operated between 1899 and 1967 by the 'Missionary Society of the Methodist Church' (Canada), and, after 1925, by the 'Board of Home Missions of the United Church' on approximately 40 acres of the Norway House Cree Nation No. 17 reserve, near Rossville, Manitoba, Canada. The reserve is on the shores of Little Playgreen Lake, about 40 kilometres north of Lake Winnipeg. In 1840, Rev. James Evans, of the Methodist Church, established a mission at Norway House. Just across the bay was a Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) post, a regional hub, that collected furs from the company’s extensive Manitoba network and sent them on to York Factory on Hudson Bay, for export. Reverend Evans had opened a day school for about 25 students at Norway House, soon after he established his mission. However, it was not until 1898 that the Methodist Church requested funds from the federal government, to build a boarding school at the location. The residence would serve the numerous Indigenous communities in the region, many of whom, did not wish to send their children as far away as the 'Brandon Indian Residential School', in southern Manitoba. Initially, recruitment of students for Norway House Residential School focused on Norway House, itself and the surrounding area, but, children from the remote communities of Cross Lake, God’s Lake, Oxford House, Island Lake, Poplar River and Berens River also attended the school. In later years, however, dissatisfaction with the boarding school in a number of these communities forced recruiters to seek children from farther afield, in particular: Nelson House, Split Lake and Fox Lake, but also the very distant communities of Churchill, Shamattawa and Trout Lake, Ontario. On her death-bed, Mary Apetagon revealed that “Grandpa Willy”, the man her children had been taught was their grandfather, wasn’t. Their biological grandfather, she said, was a French-Canadian, named Reverend Father Albert Chamberland, a former principal at a residential school where their grandmother had been a student. Therese Evans, Mary’s mother, was only a young teenager, when she got pregnant. John Henry Jr., assistant to the Chief and Council of Norway House Cree Nation said, that he spoke to an Elder in Norway House who claimed, his late wife had been sexually assaulted by Chamberland, when she was just a young child. Many other people from the community have very similar stories about Chamberland, who died in 1984. When asked, whether the Archdiocese knew of any allegations against the priest, Archbishop Chatlain in his statement said, “We are unaware of any files, that allude to this situation.”
