Cornell MacNeil (born 24 September 1922 in Minneapolis, Minnesota), sings this aria with true chiraoscuro developed through pure and coordinated vocal registers. His voice is so dark and heavy, but still has the ringing core of clarity. What is also amazing is that he keeps so much falsetto coordination in the sound that it allows full chest that is not harsh or constricted. It also allows for beautiful mezza voci. People don't seem to understand that mezza voci and pianissimi are relative to the size of the same person's forte. So MacNeil's mezza voci might be as big as another person's mezzo forte. It is only relative to your own voice. No one is singing even close to this now. Every baritone should know this voice and know what a true Verdi baritone should sound like.
