NASA Commercial Crew Program’s 2018 calendar is ready for the new year. The calendar is made from artwork submitted by children from around the world ages 4-12 years old. Getting our youth interested and excited in science, technology, engineering and math is important to future space exploration, and this art contest is just one of many ways we can help spark the imagination of our future scientists, engineers and explorers as we prepare to once again launch astronauts from the United States. Two children from Tamil Nadu’s Dindigul district beat over 3,000 entries to take home the winner’s trophy for NASA’s 2018 Commercial Crew Program Calendar Art Contest. The two children, Kaviya BJ and K Selva Sreejith, from Shree Vidhya Mandhir in Pushpathur, put in shade entries from over 193 countries across the globe to have their artworks sent to the International Space Station. The works of the duo, who are still studying in the sixth standard, would even feature in NASA’s 2018 calendar. The contest was open to children from the age group ranging from four to twelve years, reported IE. Given a handful of diverse topics, the kids were asked to select their personal favourite and create an art piece on the basis of their chosen topic. In total, ten winners were selected from different countries including Indonesia, Italy, France and Germany.
Sreejith’s topic for the contest was ‘What would you take from home?’ while Kaviya chose the topic ‘Space food’. The former illustrated an organic garden in the outer space where an astronaut took his precious possessions to, including his daughter and his dog. Mentioning her personal views on the topic, Sreejith gave a detailed description on what she should take from home into the space. Sreejith’s answer read, “What would you take from home? Today, every astronaut goes to space to do very special work. But because they’re gone so long, they each take some personal items to remind them of home or small things to do during their limited free time. Some of those things astronauts take include musical instruments, MP3 players, or small toys.”

On the other hand, Kaviya illustrated her idea of space food and wrote, “Space Food: There are no grocery stores in space. When new supplies are sent to the International Space Station, there’s always some fresh food like fruits and vegetables, but almost everything is prepackaged so it will last a long time. #Trendingrainbow
