All right folks-- we are done with 1995 and moving on to 1996 with the next video! We close our series with a seminal 3D weapons fighting game, the first in a long series by Namco called SOUL EDGE! Yes, this got a name change in its Playstation 1997 release as SOUL BLADE (maybe someone can leave a comment as to why the title was changed). For the first game in the SOUL EDGE/CALIBUR series, this looks simply amazing with no major flicker or jagged polygonal proportions on the fighters (it wasn't nearly as polished on the Playstation port). 8 fighters battle on a platform and can knock each other off for a "ring out" victory, and a "Critical Edge" move can devastate an opponent with multiple hits, though this depletes your Critical Meter. There's a couple bosses waiting at the end in a pirate named Cervantes and a revenant ghost that fills his armor after he's defeated, and he possesses the titular weapon that the protagonist takes for their own in their ending. A second version of Soul Edge called SOUL EDGE VER. II adds a new character called Hwang and lets you play as Cervantes! There's also a Time Attack mode, some new moves and new stages, Guard Impacts and Air Combos, names for the music tracks (displayed at the bottom of the screen during battle), and these additions unfortunately costs a whopping 3 credits!
