Short answer: yes! But they're not really deadly; just not very agreeable for most creatures to eat.

That's how they protect themselves, of course, but there are some birds and insects who are unfazed by monarchs. Orioles can often eat them and I've seen many a wasp eat a caterpillar who was preparing to pupate.
