Exploring Henry Island: A Hidden Gem of Sundarban

After spending a few days in the Sundarbans, I arrived in Bakkhali, South 24 Parganas, with a desire to capture the local lifestyle and tourist spots through my lens. In this video, I bring you a visual journey through the serene and mesmerizing beauty of Henry Island. Journey to Henry Island

Early in the morning, I set off towards Kakdwip, captivated by the mystical beauty of a foggy dawn. Despite the emotional attachment to the village, I gathered myself and moved towards my new destination, reminding myself that sometimes, it's more about the journey than the destination. After a brief rest at my aunt's house in Kakdwip, I resumed my journey, accompanied by my nephew. A quick breakfast stop along the way allowed me to observe the disciplined traffic control, which left a positive impression on me.

Crossing the Namkhana Bridge

We soon reached the Namkhana Bridge, which spans the Hatania Doania River. This 1.3-kilometer-long bridge, completed in 2019, plays a vital role in West Bengal's tourism industry, providing a crucial link to Bakkhali Beach, Henry Island, and Mousuni Island. From the bridge, the scenic view of the fishing boats and the surrounding towns was breathtaking.

Discovering Henry Island

Finally, we arrived at Henry Island, entering through the gate managed by the West Bengal State Fisheries. The area is well-maintained, with numerous fishery ponds and a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for those seeking a peaceful retreat. The watchtower offered a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, including the mangrove forests and the distant sea. After soaking in the sights, we made our way to the beach.

A Walk to the Secluded Beach

Parking our bikes, we walked along a narrow path surrounded by dense mangrove trees, leading to the beach. The off-season solitude enhanced the beauty of the place, with white sand dunes and rows of mangrove trees defining the landscape. The cool sea breeze and the absence of the harsh sun made the walk even more enjoyable. The history behind the name "Henry Island" added a touch of intrigue to the visit, as it was named after a British surveyor during the colonial era.
