"The Created Legend" is a novel by Fyodor Sologub, a Russian Symbolist poet, novelist, translator, playwright and essayist. The book was written after the 1905 Revolution and partially influenced by it. The story revolves around Giorgiy Sergeyevitch Trirodov, a retired private teacher who has bought a large but strange house, once owned by a relative of theirs. It was said that the house was inhabited by ghosts, and by phantoms who had left their graves. Trirodov attempts to secede from the troubled society of early twentieth century Russia to build his own utopia: a school for the quiet children he cares for. The legend that Sologub has in mind is the active, eternally changing process of life, orderly and structural in spite of the external confusion. The author makes an effort to bring order out of apparent chaos by stripping life of its complex modern detail and reducing it to a few significant symbols, as in a rather more subtle "morality play." The book is a reflection of the author's own life and his experiences with the literary world. It is a work of art that is both beautiful and thought-provoking. .
