Aravind Ganesh, Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary, shares his thoughts on recent developments in the stroke triage landscape. In an age where gold standard treatments for ischemic stroke have been clearly defined, a key challenge in stroke care is ensuring timely treatment for eligible patients. While systems of care have improved in some areas, much of the world still lacks access to these therapies. Current pre-hospital systems primarily use examination-based techniques to identify strokes. Dr Ganesh comments on the promise of technology to aid in pre-hospital stroke identification, allowing medical professionals with less expertise to identify stroke more confidently and thus, improve appropriate transfers and increase reperfusion therapy access. Additionally, developing ways of protecting the brain during transport to save more tissue for treatment is crucial. Upon arrival at the hospital, AI-based imaging analysis is assisting frontline physicians, ensuring accurate and swift treatment decisions. This interview took place during the International Stroke Conference 2024 in Phoenix, AZ.
