Stress. I have it. You probably have it. And the nurses who work in the ER have it in spades. Detroit Receiving Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, a level I trauma center, asked me to make a film that they could use to help nurses deal with stress, with burnout, with the feeling that they had less of the feelings that they needed to feel, to take proper care of their patients.

I decided to have my crew sit there in the hospital during the day and night shifts and film what we saw. I felt that the first step in helping nurses and doctors and other hospital support personnel to reduce stress would be to admit the circumstances that they are under on a day-to-day basis - circumstances very often of extreme stress. As one of the nurses says in this video, they're quiet until all of a sudden, all hell breaks loose.

Filming this story inside an emergency department with the freedom to go anywhere and see anything gave me a profound appreciation for what hospital work is like, for how much I as an American citizen appreciate the doctors and especially the nurses and especially the ER nurses who do this incredible work saving lives day after day after day.

I am proud of this film. It is used by hospitals and nursing schools around the country. It's very real but not “reality” like the fakey ER hospital series now on TV. Thank you Detroit Receiving Hospital for giving me the chance to make this.
