The 23-year-old juggles the intensive demands of competing in the 1500m for Great Britain with her studies for a degree in veterinary medicine at the University of Glasgow.

And as you might imagine, it doesn't leave too much time for going out.

Just doing one of the above would be more than enough for most people, but Muir has scaled these twin peaks of sport and academia for four years now.

Not only that, but the Scot is - all of a sudden - one of our brightest medal hopes on the track after breaking the British record of Kelly Holmes in storming to victory at the recent Anniversary Games in London.

Holmes set the benchmark in memorably winning gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics and if Muir follows suit on Wednesday, she'll surely get a chance at long last to let her hair down. First though, she must negotiate her semi-final tonight [Sun].

Muir has completed four years of five on her vet course but will take some time off after the Olympics to concentrate on next year's World Championships in London.

Once she hangs up her spikes, the aim is to look after dogs, cats and rabbits at her own veterinary practice, so it's important to keep refreshing her knowledge.
