In this compelling historical account, we delve into a remarkable encounter between Caliph Hasham Ibn Abdul al-Malik and the esteemed scholar Taus (R.A). When Caliph Hasham arrived in Medina, he ordered that someone from the Companions be brought to him. Since all the Companions had passed away, Taus (R.A), a prominent scholar from the Tabieen (Successors), was summoned.
Upon meeting the Caliph, Taus (R.A) took off his shoes and greeted Hisham with "As-salamu alaykum ya Hasham," an action that infuriated the Caliph. Hasham, enraged, even considered having Taus (R.A) executed but was persuaded to reconsider due to the sacredness of the place and Taus's (R.A) esteemed status.
Hasham accused Taus (R.A) of four offenses:
1. Removing his shoes in front of the Caliph (which Hisham considered disrespectful).
2. Not addressing him as "Amir al-Mu'minin" (Commander of the Faithful).
3. Calling him by name rather than his honorific title.
4. Sitting without permission.
Taus (R.A) responded to each accusation with profound wisdom:
1. He explained that he removed his shoes as a sign of humility before Allah, who he reverently faces in prayer five times a day.
2. He did not use the title "Amir al-Mu'minin" because not everyone accepted Hasham’s rule as legitimate.
3. He addressed Hisham by name rather than title because Allah addresses His friends by name (e.g., "O David ," "O Moses") and His enemies by their titles.
4. He sat without permission because, according to a saying of Imam Ali, a tyrant’s fate in Hell is described as being surrounded by serpents and scorpions, a vision that aligns with someone who rules unjustly.
Hasham was deeply impressed by Taus (R.A) responses and requested further advice. Taus (R.A) advised him that those who fail to administer justice are destined for a severe punishment in Hell.
