Organizations... I have a theory. For those preparing for the project management professional (PMP) certification exam or the PMI-ACP agile exam, the concept of organizational theory and team environment is one to be aware of.
Projects require people. Rarely is it just you. As a project manager or a team member on a project, you are relying on your teammates and the manner in which your organization and environment is arranged, supported, managed, and adapts to changing conditions and needs. The more optimized to the current and long term needs, the more productive the project. Not an easy proposition. There are many theories on the best means and approaches. Instead of lecturing you on all the various styles and theories, I am reminding you as a project manager that your role is to ensure that the project team and other stakeholders have an environment and organizational arrangement best suited for them, their needs, and the project. For now, let's focus on the purpose of organizational theory in project management. At least that is my theory.
