Tamping is the process where coffee grounds are applied with pressure to create an even and perfectly dense channel for the water to pass through, eventually reaching the coffee cup. Not only does tamping help achieve an even extraction of coffee, but it can also alter the strength and flavour of your espresso.

Follow this 5-step guide and discover how tamping can improve your coffee’s taste and flavour:
1. Before starting the tamp and trim process, make sure you have perfectly ground coffee in the filter basket.
2. Tap the portafilter several times to distribute the coffee grounds evenly.
3. Tamp down firmly using the tamper tool. As a guide the top edge of the metal cap of the tamper should be level with the top of the filter basket after the coffee has been tamped.
4. Once you have tamped the coffee grind to evenly distribute pressure, insert the razor tool into the filter basket until the shoulders of the tool rest on the rim of the basket.
5. Rotate the razor trimming tool once while holding the filter basket on an angle over a knock box to trim off any excess coffee grinds.
