10 years on from being the inaugural single on the Super Weird Substance label, ‘Summer Came My Way’ gets a limited 7” vinyl release to celebrate the anniversary. Having written the song, I recruited teenage twins, Carmel & Katherine Reynolds, for this and other recordings on the label, to which they added either lead or backing vocals. Carmel is at the forefront here, whereas it was Katherine on ‘Don’t You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come’, which was re-issued on 7” a couple of years ago, setting the precedent for this release, with all copies snapped up in no time. The radio edit appears here back-to-back with a previously unreleased ambient version. Mixed by California DJ, @luxxury, who was doing some great reworks around the time - his slow-mo dubby vibe perfect for ‘Summer Came My Way’. Nowadays Luxxury hosts the excellent podcast series, ‘One Song’, where, along with actor/writer, @diallo Riddle, he educationally/entertainingly deconstructs the origins of classic records. On its original release, ‘Summer Came My Way’ became something of a downtempo/balearic favourite, and was made available on 12” for the second time in 2019, as part of the ‘Substance Select Vol 1’ EP – all copies of both releases selling out, as has the ‘Super Weird Substance’ CD compilation on which it also appeared, making this the only physical copy of the song currently available.
