Welcome to the Joy Route Podcast. I’m Franki, and I’ve spent the last five years living mostly full‑time in a minivan I converted into a camper.

Van life can be peaceful and beautiful, but it also comes with the unexpected: strange encounters, unsafe parking spots, people following you, and moments where survival matters more than scenery.

On a drive through the San Bernardino Mountains, I found myself on a narrow road with no turnouts, a steep drop beside me, and a car that kept lingering behind me.

My fear of heights kicked in hard, and before long I was pulled over on a tiny patch of dirt, crying and panicking, unsure how to get myself down safely.

Calling 911 brought firefighters and paramedics who helped calm me down, checked my vitals, and eventually drove my van to safety while I rode in the fire truck with my eyes closed. They dropped me off at a nearby park to regroup.

That’s where things took an even stranger turn.

This episode is the honest, unfiltered side of van life: the fear, the vulnerability, the kindness of first responders, and the reality of navigating the world while living on the road.
