#4: The SMG2 Staff Credits.
Release Notes.

The Super Mario Galaxy series is a work of art. Excellent mechanics, whimsical and creative dialogue, vibrant colours, well-designed stages and items...not to forget the most colourful soundtracks to ever grace a game. The tracks themselves have incredible variety, showing off creations of rhythmic electronica to live orchestral pieces - and it is the latter kind of music that shines through the whole collection. Galaxy 1 brought along the most beautiful orchestral piece, and I argue, the best piece, in the Mario series - "Gusty Garden Galaxy". The world was shaken, everyone loved it, and the creators realised that it was akin to the VGM work of the decade. So it came back in the next installment of the series, which had an OST even more extravagant and beautiful than before.

But if there was one track that I could choose to represent the OST of the franchise along with "Gusty Garden", it would be the grand "Staff Credits" theme of Galaxy 2. It's a pity that they couldn't give it a less humble title, but I bet that everyone stopped to listen to the music of the credits, straight from the opening horn call. It is the track that shows listeners the real power of Koji Kondo's (this guy is awesome) and Mahito Yokota's writing, and it's just spectacular no matter how you judge it.

The piece is about, as usual, Mario's triumphant return from a defining battle with bad-guy Bowser. But in this game, Mario returns peace to the land in the most grand fashion possible - the horns sing out for the return of a hero amidst the shimmering light from the stars, represented with an energetic string ostinato in the upper register.

The hero touches the ground, and dances with the friends he's made throughout his journey; here, the main theme of Galaxy 2 - the first theme of "Sky Station Galaxy" - enters in a playful solo oboe, reminiscent of "Gusty Garden". It's a sweet, cheerful theme, and these lovely melodies are the perfect reflection of the charming attitude of the Galaxy series: the world's at stake, so remember to have fun! ^^

The first climax of the music hits in the heart-dropping form of an orchestral tutti, with a majestic brass fanfare at the forefront. The orchestra sings the final chord togeher, and the signature solo oboe returns with the second theme of "Sky Station Galaxy", like the ode of Rosalina to the skies above.

Then the orchestra builds gradually. The harmony grows unstable, instruments creep in one by one, and the brasses call in none other than the melody of "Gusty Garden". The strings soar above long chords from the orchestra - as Mario soars triumphantly in the skies. More textures creep in, and snare drum rhythm from the original "Gusty Garden" enters, bringing Starship Mario to life as the whole orchestra sings Galaxy's greatest melody in perfect, beautiful harmony.

As of this release, I have yet to find an ending theme more complete in itself than the one from Galaxy 2. The orchestration shows off technical and creative mastery, the melodies are at the level of timeless classics, and every part of the track is a masterpiece. I hope my humble piano arrangement of this classic has at least matched the standards that the original has set, and hey, hope you enjoyed yourself too :)
