Jim Seals, with his flat tweed hat, and his long-haired collaborating cohort, Dash Crofts, combined their multi-instrumentalist talent to become one of the most successful recording acts of the 70’s.

Before they were established as a duo, they spent 4 years grinding it out on the road with The Champs- the creators of the universal party anthem Tequila- transitioned into ‘work for hire’ studio musicians, and then assembled a short-lived group called The Dawnbreakers:

In 1969, they streamlined into a twosome, and formed Seals & Crofts, but it still took 3 albums, and 3 more years to bust the pop radio bubble with their breakthrough single that nearly didn’t happen. It took unflappable determination, and some old fashioned salesmanship for Seals & Crofts to finally breakthrough in ’72 with their signature ‘feel fine’ hit….”Summer Breeze.”

James Eugene Seals and Darrel George “Dash” Crofts grew up in small towns in the heart of Texas- less than 50 miles from each other. West Texas had a history of musical families that performed together. Legends like Hoyle Nix, and the King of Western Swing, Bob Wills, came from musical families in the rural areas of West Texas:

The Seals family was part of that rich tradition. When asked about his youth, Jim recounted how the oil rigs that surrounded the town of town of Sydney, Texas, smelled SO BAD, sometimes it was hard to breathe. Yet, despite the polluted air of his homeland, he was enormously proud of his roots. Jim learned to play the fiddle when he was 6, and won the State Fiddlers Championship for under 18 year olds when he was only 9.

In fact, Jim’s father, Wayland Seals, won the State Fiddlers championship for adults that same year, making them the only father and son in Texas to win those honors in the same year.
Jim didn’t stop with the fiddle... He learned to play the guitar, and began to play the saxophone at 13.
