Polaris Fashion Place Mall began construction in June, 2000 and opened in November, 2001. The original 7 anchor stores were Sears, JCPenney, Lord & Taylor, Kaufmann’s, Lazarus, Saks Fifth Avenue and The Great Indoors. Sears, JCPenney and Lazarus all relocated to Polaris from Northland Mall which closed on Halloween, October 31, 2002. In 2006 Macy’s Inc bought out May Department Stores Company and closed Kaufmann’s in 2007 demolishing the building and creating an outdoor concourse. Lord & Taylor was closed in 2004 and Von Maur replaced it as the first in the state of Ohio. In 2012 Sears announced all of its The Great Indoors locations would close and in 2015 was replaced by Dick’s Sporting Goods. In 2019 Sears closed and was replaced with a sports complex in 2021.
Polaris Fashion Place is owned by Washington Prime Group and was developed by Glimcher Realty Trust. It has 200 stores and services and covers 1,278,277 sq ft. This mall is partly responsible for the closer of City Center Mall and Northland Mall in Columbus and has also turned the Tuttle Mall into a dead mall. The only other mall in Columbus is Easton Town Center which is largely an outdoor lifestyle center.
