Let’s talk straight — what you wear in the water can make or break a shark interaction. Colors like bright yellow and pure white aren’t just eye-catching to humans — they also stand out dramatically in the ocean.

“Yum Yum Yellow” didn’t get that name by accident. Bright yellow can act like a visual dinner bell to some species. Sharks don’t see color the same way we do, but they are extremely sensitive to contrast, light, and movement. That yellow gear? It might as well be a flashing sign saying “check me out.”

Bright white can have a similar effect. In the shifting light underwater, stark white flashes can resemble the belly of a distressed fish — especially when combined with erratic movement.

This doesn’t mean sharks are coming after you — it means we should respect their environment and minimize confusion. You're in their home, and what you wear can either help keep an encounter calm or make it unpredictable.

Bottom line:
If you're diving or swimming around sharks, leave the neon and bright whites at home. Choose darker, low-contrast gear and always approach with calm, awareness, and respect.
