Diabetes is a group of conditions where the level of sugar in the blood, known as blood glucose, is elevated. This excess sugar in the blood can lead to severe health issues, some of which can be life-threatening. In the case of type 2 diabetes, the pancreas produces enough insulin, but there's a glitch in either receptor binding or insulin signalling within the target cells. These cells become unresponsive to insulin, preventing the import of glucose and causing it to accumulate in the blood. In simpler terms, individuals with type 2 diabetes are considered "Insulin Resistant."

 

While genetic factors contribute to susceptibility to the disease, lifestyle choices play a crucial role in type 2 diabetes. Typically, a higher risk is associated with obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and an unhealthy diet. Type 2 diabetes is often characterized by adult onset, with symptoms gradually appearing after the age of 30. It constitutes approximately 80 to 90% of all diabetes cases. Management strategies focus on weight loss and include adopting a low-carb diet.
