The New Jersey Poetry Out Loud State Finals were virtually judged in early March 2021. Ten State Finalists competed online, reciting two poems each for four judges, who scored them on physical presence, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, evidence of understanding, accuracy, and their overall performance. Then the top five students competed in a final round to determine the State Champion and Runner-Up.

The State Champion will go on to compete in the National Finals, also being held virtually, where the winner will be awarded a first prize of $20,000 as well as $5,000 for his or her school to buy poetry books.

Now in its 16th year, Poetry Out Loud was created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, and is carried out in partnership with the State Arts Agencies around the country. The New Jersey State Council on the Arts runs the year-long NJPOL program in partnership with Mayo Performing Arts Center. The program is administered with a host of regional partners including Rutgers Camden Center for the Arts, Appel Farm Arts & Music Center, Count Basie Center for the Arts, South Orange Performing Arts Center, and CavanKerry Press.
