SIN PAAR - 7 DAYS SPRING FESTIVAL- The Festival of of the kocha tribe the aboriginal and genuine kochas of ancient Assam living here since 2500 BC-1600 BC
Kochas are not the kingdom making Koch but only their tribe name is associated with the Koch kingdom since the founder was from Koch tribe, this kochas are the aboriginal ones who didn't follow the king biswa singha. this koches follow their tribe chief called "Paare" and they are distinct and different from that of kingdom making people of Koch kingdom. the Koch who remained in the forests and hills and preserved their tribal culture and language, and have not converted to sanskritisation is the original Koch and they call themselves kocha.
Kocha Tribe is mainly known as Koch Rabha in Assam and they are considered as one of the earliest aboriginal tribe of North East India. They are mainly found around the forest areas of North Bengal (Dooars), Debitola (Kokrajhar), around the district of Kokrajhar and Chirang. But Kochas of Meghalaya are not counted as Koch Rabha but recognised by the Government of Meghalaya as just Koch. KOCHAS have been facing a lot of identity problem as well as disintegrating and losing their heritage with time.
Rabha is not a Single tribe but a collection of 8 tribes. Namely
1. Kocha or koch Rabha
2. Hana or shonga Rabha
3. Maitori Rabha
4. Bitolia Rabha
5. Pati Rabha
6. Totla Rabha
7. Rongdani Rabha
8. Dahari Rabha.
The koches of South bank or koch hajo or East Koch Kingdom were invited by garo tribesman to teach them agriculture in 17th century. There due to communication issue the Garo tribes use the word Riba in their language to call someone (Riba means Come) , so the word Riba that were used by Garos to call the kochas to help the Garos became a name for them in South Bank. From the word Riba it became Rabha at Simsang Valley near Williamnagar, garo hills, hence today all are called rabha. Whereas the Kocha tribals kept their identity intact and still call themselves koch or kocha. In 1973 AD the kocha tribe under the pressure of Govt, in order to save them from Sanskritisation they were kept under the category name of Rabha. Koch Tribe kept their tribal identity intact with own language, culture, customary laws and ancient history from the vedic times .Since 1973 AD the kochas were kept under the Umbrella of Rabha by the Government from the slogan of Bishnu Rabha "kochai rabha, rabhai Koch". but till today the kochas identify themselves as Kocha and that Kocha is distinct and original. Though the koches of meghalaya were not kept under the umbrella of Rabha but were given the genuine identity Koch.
Koches of meghalaya ,Assam and North Bengal are genuine , the following group are genuine original Koch tribe:
1.kocha or koch rabha
2.Harigaya
3. Banai
4. Chapra
5. Tintikiya
6. Wanang
7. Sankar
8. Satparia.
9. Margan
It's an anthropological treasure as well as anthropological Confusion.
Though despite this named tribes of Rabha and Koch they were once the original Koch of Ancient Kamrupa kingdom where Gatot Kocha was a part of the Mahabharat Where kochas are mentioned in vedas as Kuvacha.
The sister tribes of Kochas are bodos, hajongs, garos, dimasas, Tiprasa, sonowal, lalung, etc mainly the Kachari Group of people. they were also called rakshas or kirat during mahabharat.
kochas derive their title from their mother and they follow Matriarchal customary law.
the woman is the head of the family.
if anyone claims to be koch but doesn't fulfill all this customary criteria are not kocha or koch. they wear kaanbang, kemblet, lufun, fanchek, busuk, kalai and other jewelry items.
they speak kocha (sino-tibetan) closely related to bodo and garo language.
despite being kept under the umbrella of rabha the kochas still are unadulterated and remain to this day. any person who does not follow the language of kocha, mother's clan or kocha laws or converted to sanskritisation is not considered as their own but they disown them from their tribe.
some of the original Koch tribe still haven't merged under the umbrella of Rabha. Kochas are the main indigenous tribe that preserved their language and culture and has a strong clan culture which they call Hwsuk or Nikini and they follow it strictly. They still exist and are marginalized without security or protection.
