This AI movie trailer is based on my own true story.

I'm not sure how much of this experience I'm actually allowed to share, so just in case, I won't mention specific names.

In 2023 I was offered a position as head of a mineral mine in the Congo. We took a charter plane to the mining site in order to gather samples.

Our plane crashed deep in the Congolese jungle early in the morning on April 22nd.

Everyone was fine, and it could have been much worse, a small shock, but the plane couldn't fly again; it was ruined.

We ended up talking to the local military stationed next to the settlement where the mine was located and found out there was absolutely no cell connection and our satellite phone had only about 10% battery left.

We made the necessary calls, but with no confirmation of when someone would come, we were pretty much stranded. The closest town was a few days hike, a town called Walikale.

This wasn't feasible, as we would have had to cross the Congo River, which is infested with crocodiles, and a detour would mean a multi-day hike.

Later in the afternoon when the sat phone had ran out of battery we found out from the military that there was something they used sometimes, they called it "Le baton magie" or "The magic stick"

This was a wooden stick planted in the ground with a notch cut into it that somehow gave you 1-2 bars of cell connection, just enough to send a text.

Since we had no connection and no idea of when someone was coming to rescue us we decided to just carry on with business as normal.

We went to various mining sites around the area to gather samples.

Once we had managed to collect everything we needed it was now later that evening and starting to get dark. The military told us there was an abandoned settlement a couple of miles away that the Belgians used when they were in the area.

They told us we could sleep there and they would lend us mattresses. We didn't have any food, only water so for dinner I ended up having some rations from the emergency kit in the plane.

The next day we were up at 6am and we decided that rather than just sitting around we would go and get more samples, you can never have too much data, right?

After getting as many bags of samples as we could carry we went back to the plane and somehow, the local villagers had managed to pull the plane out of where it crashed.

We also got word that there was a possible chance of another charter plane coming to try and pick us up, there was just one small problem.

The plane was sitting in the middle of what was supposed to be the runway, so we needed to push it out of the way so the other plane could land.

I wanted to see if I could push it by myself (I couldn't) so all the men from the village came and joined in once they saw me.

Shortly after at around 11:30am we heard the faint buzz of a propellor.

Sure enough, minutes later our rescue plane came roaring overheard to pick us up. It had no seats, we were nearing the weight limit but by the grace of god we managed to make it out of there and back to Goma.
