In rise of the ronin, Pilgrim Dog that travels to a shrine in place of its master. Next to Ise Grand Shrine, Kotohira Shrine (also known as Konpira Shrine) became a popular pilgrimage destination for commoners during the Edo period. However, as few were able to make such a journey on their own, there emerged a custom of sending people and dogs in one's stead.
