The 2025 NCAA D3 National Cross Country Championship took place on November 22 at Milliken Arboretum in Spartanburg, South Carolina. *Disclaimer: I did not announce this event. It was held in my hometown of Spartanburg, SC and being the XC fan I am, I took in the day as a fan and spectator.
On a warmer than anticipated fall morning in the Upstate of South Carolina, the best D3 runners in the nation toed the line for a shot at glory. Many people who aren’t as familiar with D3 athletics, assume that it isn’t as competitive. Not true at all. Maybe not the same depth as D1 or D2, but plenty competitive.
The men took to the route first for their 8K. And they absolutely lit it up. A total of 52 men averaged 5:00 pace-per-mile or better, with the champion averaging 4:45 pace-per-mile, on the rolling terrain of the Milliken Arboretum…truly one of the most beautiful courses in the country.
For most of the race, a large pack of men stayed in contention. It wasn’t until the last 2K that the quick pace, and the rising temperatures, took their toll and strung the pack out a bit. The final 1K saw several runners in contention for the individual title; Mohammed Bati (Augsburg), Emmanuel Leblond (Johns Hopkins), Grant Mathei (UW-La Crosse) and Isaac Vanwestrienen (Cornell) were in an epic battle for the win. In the end, Senior Leblond of Johns Hopkins, had a little more gas in the tank to bound up the final hill with a quarter mile to go. Averaging 4:45 pace-per-mile, Leblond crossed the line in an outstanding 23:35 to win the NCAA D3 National Cross Country Championship.
The team win was a convincing victory. D3 powerhouse, the men of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse won it with 82 points, for back-to-back titles. Their top four runners placed in the top 24 overall but once individual qualifiers were discounted, those four scored 3,4,5, & 13 with their fifth runner scoring 57 points.
