A common problem in the relationship between parents and teenagers occurs when the teen perceives that the parent is frequently complaining or “picking” on them. This usually results from the parent observing many changes in their teenager that they do not view as positive. The parent will then begin to criticize those behaviors. The teen may feel that “they cannot do anything right”.
Over time the criticisms can become more and more frequent. The parent is hopeful that their criticism will translate into positive behavioral changes. When this does not occur, the relationship can become increasingly negative. This video describes a simple technique to restore some degree of positivity into the relationship between parent and teen, by providing reasonable praise to a teenager for examples, sometimes small, of positive behavior by the teen. Although it is not a difficult thing to do, it requires effort and focus on the part of the parent. It’s application will not solve large problems, but over time it tends to have a positive effect on the family relationship if applied correctly.
