The 2016 Patek Philippe Nautilus Chronograph is the ultimate 40th anniversary present for collectors of Patek Philippe's most famous luxury watch; it's the largest and grandest Nautilus watch model ever built. The 44mm white gold Nautilus Chronograph 5976/1G is the mightiest sports watch ever to hail from Patek's manufacture and a rare opportunity for the most committed collectors of Patek Philippe watches.

1976 marked the debut of the Patek Philippe Nautilus 3700; 2006 witnessed the arrival of the Nautilus chronograph 5980. Combine anniversaries of both landmark models, and the result is the limited edition Nautilus Chronograph 40th Anniversary. The 1,300 piece limited edition 5976/1G was launched as a white gold companion to the 700-piece platinum Nautilus "Jumbo" 5711/1P. While the platinum 5711 was neither the first platinum Nautilus nor dramatically different from the standard 5711 "Jumbo," the while gold chronograph was an remains unique.

For a start, the Nautilus 5976/1G is huge. At 44mm in diameter and 49.35mm at its widest point, this Nautilus Chronograph is a direct rival to oversized luxury standards such as the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore and the Hublot Big Bang Unico. The sheer size and mass of the 5976/1G - over 313 grams - makes it unusual for traditionally conservative Patek Philippe.

Moreover, the dial of the 40th Anniversary Nautilus Chronograph courted controversy. With saturated metallic blue dial, the 5976/1G comes on strong; diamond hour indices compound the visual drama. But the bold 40th Anniversary legend "1976-2016: 40," leads to love-hate reactions from Patek Philippe traditionalists. The dial logo is not legible or even visible from a distance, but its polarizing effect is inescapable. Patek Philippe compounds the 40th Anniversary commemoration with a solid cork display box that harks back to 1970s Nautilus 3700 boxes; a 40th Anniversary certificate is unique to the model and its platinum 40th anniversary Nautilus counterpart.

Mechanically, the 40th Anniversary Nautilus Chronograph is identical to a standard 5980. The Patek Philippe manufacture caliber CH 28-520 features automatic winding, a 55-hour power reserve, a flyback chronograph, a freesprung Gyromax balance with a Spiromax silicon hairspring, a column wheel and vertical clutch, and the Patek Philippe seal. It is rated at an accuracy of -3/+2 seconds per day from the factory. The chronograph displays its hours and minutes on a dial-side "monocounter" that keeps the dial clean; a date display is adjusted using a pusher tool. Finally, the Nautilus 5976 includes 120-meter water resistance.
