Becoming KALI

Painted self-portrait ‘Becoming KALI’...back to my Indian Roots, "Singh" on my mother's side. Nods to both sides of my family, the trauma of race, and complicated identity and ancestry...My father, who is American of German descent & My mother who is Trinidadian-Indian. The layers and depths of politics, the skin game and my unacceptance that started in the home and extended into my immediate community. The layers of female sexuality is represented here in my overcoming childhood physical and sexual abuse and finding my voice and strength as a mentally ill female artist. My ancestors were taken from India and forced by the British to work the cane fields in Trinidad, known as Indentured servants, a type of slavery. My original drawing of 'Mad Women' painting (cover photo/thumbnail of this video) was exhibited at 'NYC Outsider Arts Fair' via Andrew Edlin Gallery for the 'One Year Anniversary of the Women's March'. I am proud to say my image was used during the 'Women's March' In Washington D.C. and other images of mine for the 'Black Lives Matter' protests.
