Totara (Podocarpus totara) is a large, evergreen tree native to New Zealand. It typically grows to a height of 20-30 meters and can live for over 1000 years. It prefers well-drained soils and a sunny to partly shaded location, but it can tolerate a wide range of soil types and climates.

Being hardy, Totara is an ideal tree to include with colonisers like Manuka and Kanuka in a revegetation project

Totara is known for its distinctive, dark-green foliage, and its reddish-brown bark. The tree produces small, greenish-yellow flowers that are followed by small, round, purple-black berries that are eaten by native birds such as Tui, Kaka, and Kereru

Totara has significant cultural importance to the Maori people, who have traditionally used the wood for carving, and the bark for making baskets and cloaks. The Totara tree has medicinal properties, it was traditionally used to treat a variety of ailments including respiratory infections, skin diseases, and even as an insect repellent.
