Premiering September 12, 1959, Saturday nights on NBC, BONANZA was network television’s first hour long color western series. Not a hit on Saturdays opposite the popular PERRY MASON series, BONANZA told the often humorous stories of Ben Cartwright and his three sons as they ran their enormous Nevada ranch, the Ponderosa. Two years later, when BONANZA moved to Sunday night, it became a huge success and ran for a total of 13 ½ years and 430 episodes.

General Sarnoff’s family held top positions at NBC. A WORD ON WESTERNS’ guest, Daniel Sarnoff’s father, Tom, was Head of West Coast Production, helping to bring BONANZA’s TV movies to the screen.
