00:00 Cordovan Leather Introduction

Among leather products, Cordovan is often touted as being one of the best, especially when it comes to footwear. From the outside, cordovan leather does look a little different from other types of leather: it’s particularly smooth and lustrous and possesses a rich color.

01:05 What Is Cordovan Leather?

Also known, as “Shell Cordovan”, is derived from the hindquarters of horsehide. The “shell” refers to the specific part of the hide once it has been split horizontally to remove the grain. Meanwhile, the name “cordovan” derives from the Spanish city of Córdoba, and means “from Córdoba”. Thus, together the terms refer to this specific type of horse leather.

02:15 History of Cordovan Leather

Leather has been produced and used since around 2200 BC, however, the first documented use of horse leather was in 7th century Spain. Later, in the 16th and 17th centuries, skilled craftsmen would craft ornately decorated horse leather goods.

The Spanish city of Córdoba has remained a highly reputed area for leather tanning ever since. Even today, you can find artisans in Córdoba who maintain these traditions. Because of its qualities, beauty, and durability, cordovan leather was sought after by Spanish Royalty.

06:12 Cordovan Production

The tanning of cordovan is very complex and labor-intensive. Six months and more than a hundred processes are required to produce a useable hide. Tanning is a process that does two basic things: First, it stops the natural decomposition process, and second, tanning develops the desired characteristics of the leather.

08:50 Characteristics of Shell Cordovan
→ Lustrous Shine
→ Tough Stuff
→ No Cracks Here
→ Distinctive Tones

14:48 Downsides of Cordovan Leather
→ Longer Break-In
→ Challenging Upkeep
→ Casual by Nature

19:45 So, Why Is It So Expensive?

In a nutshell, the high price of cordovan comes down to the low supply of hides, the high demand for them, and the long, complicated tanning process. Unlike cattle, horses are only raised as part of the food chain in a few places around the world, meaning the supply of horsehides is small and unlikely to grow. As we’ve already seen, tanning alone takes 6 months and a great deal of handwork. Any labor-intensive process will drive the price up at the tanning stage

21:33 Conclusion

Overall, Cordovan leather is a truly unique, intriguing material with a luster that goes deeper than its natural shine. Even with its lofty asking price, cordovan that is well looked after will endure the test of time exceptionally well and will be a joy to behold each time you wear it.
