STORYLINE:

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in China on Thursday at the start of a three-day trip to mark the 55th anniversary of the two countries' diplomatic relations and to discuss energy issues.

Putin and his wife, Lyudmila, were met at the airport by China's Deputy Foreign Minister, Dai Bin Guo.

They were driven to the State Guest House in Beijing for a private meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao.

The two presidents and first ladies paused for photographs before engaging in talks.

Later in the day, the leaders will hold formal meetings at the Great Hall of the People, the seat of China's legislature.

Putin and Hu were expected to sign a series of documents on political, economic, humanitarian and international cooperation.

Russian officials have said that discussions will centre around terrorism, arms control and the situation on the Korean Peninsula, where efforts to get North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions have stalled.

But the focus was expected to be on competing proposals championed by China and Japan for a Siberian oil pipeline, with the Russian leader indicating his own country's interests will come first in those plans.

A deal supporting Russia's accession to the World Trade Organisation was also slated to be signed.
