The medieval festival at Arundel Castle & Gardena gives us a taste of what a medieval fair might have been like, but it is important to remember that medieval fairs laid the foundation for modern day fairs, the most common being farmer’s markets, street food fairs and cultural festivals. Medieval fairs took place all over Europe. In England it was only after the Norman conquest that fairs. became of capital importance. Records exist of 2800 grants of franchise markets and fairs between the years 1199 and 1483. In the 12th century, many English towns started to organize annual fairs with the permission of the crown. These fairs were mostly 2 to 3 days long and served the local population. The major fairs of the 13th century were Stamford fair in Lent, St Ives fare at Easter, Boston fair in July, Winchester fair in September and Northampton fair in November. These were the charted fairs and organized with the permission of Royal monarch.

If you prefer to be more active and spend less time watching people and more time experiencing new things yourself, you can try ax throwing. Medieval themed fairs are now held all over the world, attracting tourists and locals alike, commemorating the past and celebrating old traditions. Medieval themed fairs provide a good source of entertainment but they can also be highly educational.
