Hanasaki crab?
Hanasaki crab is considered to be the rarest crab in Japan. So much so, that it is often called the “phantom crab”! It can only be caught from Mid-July to September in the waters off of Hanasaki Port in Nemuro Peninsula in the very east of Japan’s northern island, Hokkaido. Hanasaki means “blooming flower”, and the crabs give the appearance of a flower in bloom when they turn red during the cooking process, plus they’ve covered in thorns, just like a rose! These special Japanese crabs are extremely rare and hard to come by, so they are often sent as gifts to friends and family around the country from this small town in Hokkaido. This gift-giving custom is also meant as a wish for good luck and prosperity due to the Hanasaki crab’s bright red colour, so if you love seafood and especially crab, you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to try this lucky and rare Japanese delicacy on a visit to Japan!

TAIE Convenience Store, Nishihama Shop / タイエー西浜店
About TAIE Convenience Store
Taie is a Japanese convenience store (conbini) that can only be found in the very east of Japan’s northern island, Hokkaido. It is Japan’s rarest conbini (and probably the hardest to get to too!) as there are only 3 in the entire country, and they are all located in Nemuro! If you visit Hokkaido, it’s worth the drive out to Nemuro Peninsula just to buy their exclusive merchandise and try one of their special yakitori bento boxes, which the staff grill fresh just for you in the store!
