Have you ever wondered why in Power Rangers or other Japanese action hero shows, the hero takes like a whole minute to introduce himself or recite the name of his supermove while the opponent patiently waits? Well, there’s a historical reason to it.

Samurai were having battles everywhere in the country for several hundred years, and early on, it was a thing to have one-on-ones during battle between two samurai who were extra confident with their combat skills.

How did they initiate a one-on-one? With an introduction.

やあやあ 遠からんものは音にも聞け、近くば寄って目にも見よ。我こそは頼光四天王が一人、渡辺綱の血を引きし、三河の国浦部村より参った渡辺次郎四郎氏綱なり！腕に覚えのあるもののふあれば、前に出でい！！この首とってみせよ！！！

And then if you were the one-on-one type of warrior, you listen to this carefully because you’re going to need that information after you win and chop this guy’s head off. You need his head and his identity to apply for a bonus.

After the battle, you’re going to submit the head to the accountant and report what you remember about the guy you defeated. Then, the accountant will be like, “Hmm… that sounds like 50 grands. Give him 50.”

Of course samurai didn’t shout out the name of every supermove, but if they did, I think the opponent would have appreciated it. Because given that they won the bout, they could do a thicker show and tell.
