🍞🍅 It’s an offer almost too good to be true—free groceries for shoppers at a market in Manhattan.

But that was the case for a few hours at the Westside Market on Third Avenue in the East Village on Tuesday.

With the help of the prediction market platform Kalshi, owner George Zoitas gave everyone in line $50 towards free groceries.

“We don’t nickel and dime people,” Zoitas said. “We say something, we do it. We didn’t expect this, but it is what it is.”

The offer drew in hundreds of shoppers, who formed a line that snaked around the block and beyond.

Multiple people described food prices these days as “ridiculous” and said they were grateful for the opportunity to get some free groceries.

Kalshi’s giveaway is a nod to Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s pledge to open city-run grocery stores. Its competitor Polymarket says it will do its own pop-up next week.
