Angel Peak via Lucky Strike Road | Spring Mountains, Nevada | Visit https://lasvegasareatrails.com/angel-... | The entrance to the 4WD Lucky Strike Road is easy to miss as you’re traveling up Kyle Canyon Road on the way to Charleston Village in Southern Nevada. About half way between I-95 and Charleston Village there is an obscure sign that marks “Red Rock Canyon”. At that point an unpaved road, if you could call it a road, heads straight up a ridge to the right of Kyle Canyon Road. The first 200ft contain some class 2 climbing. I imagine a rugged 4WD vehicle could handle that stretch. I did it on my mountain bike…lifting the bike over a few shallow ledges. Once at the top everything opens up to a beautiful desert scene with views of the La Madre Mountains, Gass Peak, Sheep Range, Harris Mountain and the Mt. Charleston Wilderness area. Lucky Strike Road improves to become a rather nice unpaved road at this point. You’ll pass through Goldwater Canyon, Grassy Spring (a corral and watering hole for pack animals) and eventually on up to Angel Peak. I took a wrong turn deviating off course losing an hour, but encountering beautiful scenery. Back on Lucky Strike Road I encountered a herd of wild burros, then turned up the final 6-mile stretch to Angel Peak. That stretch is basically an avalanche slope they call a road. I had to lift my bike over obstacles a number of times, eventually reaching Angel Peak in the dark. There is a good paved road down from Angel Peak that connects with Deer Creek Road. However, it’s closed off to vehicles as it passed through the Spring Mountain Youth Camp, a juvenile correction facility. I made that stretch bypassing a couple gates blocking the road. There was little traffic at this time, so the connection with Deer Creek Road went smoothly, then on down to Kyle Canyon Road and finally to my starting point at the intersection and parking area of upper Harris Springs road. An alternate descent from Angel Peak is Wooden Pole Road which does not pass through the Spring Mountain Youth Camp. Even better, one can continue on Lucky Strike Road past Angel Peak to connect a bit lower with Deer Creek Road. I’d recommend that route as it bypasses the Spring Mountain Youth Camp and does not require the long descent on the unpaved Wooden Pole Road. The desert scenes along this route are amazing. That last 3 miles straight up Lucky Strike Road at night offers spectacular sunset views and views of the city lights in the Las Vegas Valley. However, it’s a bit brutal on a mountain bike!!
