Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Is there a way to control the default file location when Excel opens?

Welcome to the MrExcel Podcast, where we bring you helpful tips and tricks for mastering Excel. In today's episode, we will be discussing a simple yet incredibly useful feature - the default file open location. This is a question that was brought up during one of my seminars in Kent, Ohio, and I'm excited to share the solution with all of you.

As we enter budget season, many of us will be working on files located in a specific folder. So, wouldn't it be great if Excel automatically opened to that folder every time we go to file open? Well, it's possible! All you have to do is go to File, Options, and then Save. From there, check if there's a setting for Default File Location. By default, it's usually set to the Documents folder. But, we can change that to any folder we want.

Let's try it out. I'll change my default file location to C:/Budgets and then close Excel. When I open Excel again and go to file open, you'll see that we're now starting directly in the Budgets folder. It's a simple trick, but it will save you a lot of time and effort in the long run. And, once budget season is over, you can easily switch back to your default folder of choice.
