Cannonade prevailed by 21/4 lengths over Hudson County in the largest Kentucky Derby field ever with 23 starters. Princess Margaret of Britain’s Royal family was among the then-record 163,628 in attendance for the centennial running, Jockey Angel Cordero captured his first of three Derbies thanks to a masterful job getting Cannonade through traffic to take the lead rounding out of the far turn.
