Current Status and Progress:

As of March 2025, the runways were 85% complete, and the passenger terminal buildings were 51% complete.

The runway construction was expected to be ready for use by April 2025, with the passenger terminal buildings slated for completion by July 2025.

The project has seen consistent progress, with parliamentary committees expressing satisfaction with the work.

Key Features and Capacity:

The airport is being built at an estimated cost of TZS 360 billion (approximately $155 million USD, though earlier figures indicated up to $329 million USD funding from AfDB).

It is designed to be a "4E" classified airport, meaning it can accommodate large aircraft like the Boeing 787-8 (Dreamliner), capable of carrying up to 350 passengers, and potentially even the Airbus A380 (with a 3.6 km long, 60m wide runway).

Phase 1 capacity is estimated at 1.75 million passengers per annum.

The project includes:

A 3,600-meter long, 60-meter wide runway.

Multiple taxiways and parking aprons.

A three-level passenger terminal building.

An air traffic control tower.

Air navigation equipment and fire-fighting vehicles.

Fuel distribution facilities, water supply systems, and electrical substations.

Associated airport roads and car parking.

Strategic Importance:

The airport is a critical component of Tanzania's Five Year Development Plan and Vision 2025, aiming to relocate administrative functions to Dodoma and meet anticipated growth in air transport.

It will significantly improve access, regional, and international connectivity to Dodoma and the central region of Tanzania.

It is expected to boost Dodoma's economy, attract investments, stimulate local businesses, and create numerous direct and indirect jobs, positioning Tanzania prominently on the global aviation map.

The project is co-financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Tanzania.
