In the early 1900s, Thomas Edison—the same genius behind the light bulb—had a revolutionary idea: entire houses made of concrete, including the walls, roof, bathtubs, and even furniture. His vision was to create affordable, fireproof, and long-lasting homes that could be mass-produced using giant steel moulds.

Edison patented the idea, believing these homes could be built in just six days with a single pour of concrete. Unfortunately, the moulds were extremely complex, with over 2,300 pieces, making the process too expensive for builders. Despite financial backing and interest from philanthropists, the idea never became widespread.

However, a few of these concrete houses still exist today. You can find them in Union, New Jersey, and Gary, Indiana, standing as a testament to Edison’s forward-thinking vision. While his concept didn’t revolutionize housing at the time, it paved the way for modern precast concrete and modular construction.
