Breaking the silence,
London Underground.

An instrument ingrained in tradition and with a rich history, this style of playing can be frowned upon. Having played the trombone for many years (known for “slides”), I find the pipes ability to blend / glissando between notes such an irresistibly eerie sound.
It’s not the style of playing I’d adopt for most performances, especially not for pipe band playing. But, perhaps, breaking the silence of an empty underground station… that’s the right time and place.


I love the pipes so much. Invented as an instrument of war, banned twice by the government, the pipes really are so versatile, and beautifully musical. I am by no means a technically accomplished player, but, I hope sharing this video shows the instrument in another light. Best pipe inspo.. Tress, the Dark Isle piper, an incredible player, both in the traditional sense while also incorporating different styles of playing.
