As Muslims prepare for this year’s Sallah celebrations, many Nigerians are struggling to afford the symbolic ram sacrifice, a core part of the festivities that symbolises obedience to God. In 2025, skyrocketing prices have turned what was once a tradition into an unaffordable luxury for many families.

According to Smartpreneur’s market survey, RAM prices have surged by 185%-455 % year-on-year. Large rams now sell for ₦1 million, medium-sized rams that previously sold for ₦180,000–₦350,000 are now priced at ₦600,000–₦800,000, while smaller rams range from ₦200,000 to ₦500,000 — a steep 100%- 400% increase compared to 2024.
With economic hardship squeezing households, the question arises: What happens when the economy no longer supports religious rites?
