Hi, my name’s Mary- I’m a teacher of English and Arabic, and these are my tips to help you in English. This is the second video I’ve created in a series specifically to help Arabic speakers with pronunciation. I want to use my understanding of Arabic to look at some key problem areas, look at why they happen, and advise you on how to improve your speaking and listening skills in English.

There are sounds in English that are not found in the majority of Arabic dialects. For example, check out my video with Nour and Mohammed on the difference between /p/ and /b/ in English. Today, we’ll look at the difference between the sounds /əʊ / and /ɔː/

Words that have the / ɔː/ sound are: caught, nought, ball, jaw and dawn.

We make this sound by raising our tongue and bringing our lips forwards.

Words that contain /əʊ / are: phone, boat, float, note and coat.

To make this sound, we need to combine two sounds together, which are /ə/ and /ʊ/. If you say it very slowly, you can hear the two sounds.

From the side, can you see how the lips move when we say /əʊ / but they stay in the same position when we say / ɔː/. Have a look.

Here are some examples for you to practise the pronunciation of these sounds. They are taken from ‘Ship or Sheep’, which is a great book to practise your English pronunciation.

Caught, coat
Nought, note
Bought, boat
Jaw, Joe

I advise you to listen lots of times to these examples, and practise by looking in a mirror and recording yourself to check your pronunciation.
