The NSCAD University, Major in Textiles/Fashion is a four-year program that integrates three key areas of learning — structure, surface and form. Structure is primarily approached through weaving and exploring textures, repetition, weight and draping. Surface is approached through dying and screen-printing, where you will put the basic design skills learned in your foundation year to develop your language to speak about colour, patterns and shape. Form, which focuses primarily on the fashion area, will allow you to take the textile skills learned and apply them to creations in three dimensions. These areas of focus will help you hone your skills and express your voice through creative outcomes like installation art, soft sculpture, textile design, wearable art and fashion design.

With dedicated and highly skilled professors and technicians, students learn the significance of slow-making and creating by hand. Using traditional tools like looms and natural dyes, mindful and craft-based approaches to art and material expression are explored. Students learn not only how cloth is made, but also where its fiber comes from — how it is grown, picked, or sheared. Sustainability strategies are also integrated throughout the program, including local material sourcing, bio-inspired making, low-waste pattern cutting and design.
