DUCK LAKE HIKE

This beautiful day hike is part of a network of interconnected mile high trails in Alpine County, California. The network lies south of Highway 4 and runs to the mighty Stanislaus River. For the most part the trails crisscross the Carson Iceberg Wilderness, so there are no vehicles allowed. This hike begins at the trailhead at the Silver Creek campground found on the southeast side of Lake Alpine, just east of the Bear Valley Ski Resort. Stay on the trail that brings you to the west shore of Duck Lake. Duck lake, although shallow and small, is stunningly beautiful. Earlier in the summer mosquitoes hang out on the soggy trail that skirts the south side. From Duck lake the trail continues south four more miles to Elephant Rock Lake, with two branches to Rock Lake. We have hiked to Duck Lake at least a half dozen times and usually enjoy our lunch there or a half mile further on the Elephant Rock Lake trail where we lounge at tiny Duck Creek This additional leg traverses acres of glacier polished granite. Tens of thousands of years ago 600 foot thick blue ice glaciers inched down the western Sierra slope. The second half of the hike crosses this glacier scoured granite. The scattered and piled up boulders, now high and dry, were left by the melting glaciers.. Duck Creek may dry up in August. No sign labels Duck Creek so check the map at the trail head and carry sufficient supplies for this day hike.

The mushroom Luecipotus sulphurues, also known as Sulphur Shelf or Chicken of the Woods, looks like candy corn. We recommend the book MUSHROOMS DEMYSTIFIED by David Aurora if you want to identify wild edible mushrooms.
