The Meaning of Holy Orders

Описание к видео The Meaning of Holy Orders

When a deacon, priest, and bishop are ordained, they participate in the Sacrament of Holy Orders.

So, why do we call the sacrament holy “orders”?

The word “order” in the Church can be traced back to ancient Rome to refer to a civil governing body.

An ordination incorporates someone into an “ordo” of bishops, priests, or deacons.

Unlike a government official that is elected or appointed, through an ordination a person is granted through the Holy Spirit the ability to exercise “sacred power” of a particular office.

This ordination occurs through laying on of the hands of the bishop to the newly ordained person as has been done in succession all the way back to the Apostles themselves.
