"Almería" comes from the city's former Arabic name, Madīnat al-Mariyya, meaning "city of the watchtower".

Almería is very well connected, it can be reached by car, train, boat or airplane and has over 40% of the revenue from its agriculture, especially greenhouse farming which produces much of Europe's winter vegetables and fruits. With an average of 26 yearly rainy days, it is the only city in Europe with a hot desert climate and is known for its temperature that never in the history dropped below 0°C.

Caliph Abd al-Rahman III founded the city in 955. The city got wealthy during the Islamic era, becoming a world city throughout the 11th and 12th centuries. It enjoyed an active port that traded silk, oil, and raisins. Being adjacent to a small desert, Almería has an exceptionally dry climate by European standards.

El Cable Inglés (The English Pier), 1904 iron railway pier built to transfer iron ore, copper, and silver produced by British- and French-run mines in Granada from trains to waiting cargo ships.

Almería is the capital of the Province with the same name, it has just under 200.000 inhabitants and less than 300 square kms.
